Web Base Site #6 - PebbleGo and Grow

PebbleGo and Grow

Lately, I have been discussing sites that focus on teachers and students using presentation sites for well... presentations, but also lesson plans.  These sites make learning more engaging and fun for students.  I hope over the last few weeks you have been enjoying trying out these sites with your students.  This week, I would like to talk about a new site.  This is a site that would be a great way for students to get the information for their presentations.  The site of the week is PebbleGo.  PebbleGo is geared towards elementary school students to focus on literacy and research skills.  Information is broken down into sections and is very easy for your students to read.

After you log into PebbleGo, there are 5 options students can choose from: animals, biographies, health, science, and social studies.  Students can also use the search bar to find exactly what they need.  Once they pick the topic they need, the category breaks down into different subset categories and then the specific animals/people/ideas in the initial category.  After the exact topic is picked, the information is provided into different tabs where students can look under a certain area for certain information.  When students are presented with the information, there is an option for students to listen as the page can read the information to them.  Important vocab words are highlighted for students as well.  This helps with literacy, while also incorporating research because students are learning how to select the right tabs for the project that they are working on.  On the bottom of the information page of the topic, students can also find other articles, videos, activities/games, and also a citing option to include in their research.  Although students may be to young to understand how to cite, it is a great way to get them exposed to the idea and how it looks.  Going back to the home page, if students click on one of the five original categories, the bottom of the page shows games and a question of the day.  The games are more generic as it covers a lot of the different subset topics.

PebbleGo is not only for the younger age groups (K-2).  There is also PebbleGo Next, which is geared towards grades 3-5.  This is also a great to have because a strong second grade reader and use the information in PebbleGo Next.  The 5 initial options in PebbleGo Next are a little different in that there is: states, science, American Indian History, social studies, and biographies.  All the information I talked about above in how to use PebbleGo, applies to PebbleGo Next.

PebbleGo and PebbleGo Next also has a Spanish option for students who know how to read in Spanish as well!  Unfortunately, there is one downside to PebbleGo.  Although there is a free option where you can contact the makers and they will provide you with a link, it only always for two topics.  However, the pricing for the usage of PebbleGo for the year is not to much.

So try out the free version.  Tell me what you think.  You will see how much your students love the site and how engaged they are to use it.  It will always be a reliable source for them to use and not only is it easy to use and read, it sets the basic foundations for research projects that they will have to do as they get older.

As always here is the link to the site:
