Web Base Site #7 - OMP! Oh My Prodigy!
OMP! Oh My Prodigy!
The past weeks I have been talking about sites that your students can use to apply information to presentations and for teachers to use during lesson plans. I also discussed a site that students can use to find information for these projects. Today however, I'd like to talk about a site that students can use to help them apply information that they learned. This site is not for making presentations or finding information, it's for playing games! Yes, you heard that right, students can play and learn things at the same time. The site that I am referring to is called Prodigy. Prodigy is a site for both educators and students, that has games focused on math and English. Using this free site, your students can play games! Yes you heard right, games! Just what you want right, more things to distract your students. However, these aren't just any old games, they are educational games, that your students will beg you to play.
Students can make their own account, but if you, the teacher, make one, you will be given a class code that your students can enter so you are able to track their progress. Once they log in, they will be asked to select the grade they are in (first - eighth). Next, students can create their character (hair color, eye color, skin color), they can also choose the topic they want to play (math or English, where they can switch back and forth), and then they can name their character. Now it is time to get started! When it's time to get started, there will be an interactive tutorial on how to play. Essentially, there is a monster that you must defeat by battling them. There are move that your character knows that will weaken the monster. As you are battling, your characters energy also drains. In order to fill it back up, students need to answer questions that are based on their grade level. On the question page, there is a volume button to let students hear the question. Students are also able to draw and erase on the page to help them figure out the answer. If they get the question wrong, it will tell you how to fix your answer. Once you defeat the monsters, you get experience points to help you level up. You also get rewards for defeating the monster. After you beat the first monster, it then wants you to choose a pet to have for the game. Now that the tutorial is complete, you can now have fun. Students can battle their friends in the game. As you move throughout the game, you get new moves and accessories for your character. There are also new worlds that your character moves through as they get better and better. Believe it or not, students can eventually beat the game as well by getting to the puppet master.
That's it, that's Prodigy!! Math and English games that your students can play. It allows you peace of mind knowing it is educational, while also having the gaming aspect that students strive for. I would highly, highly, highly recommend this site for your students! As I said before, it will be one they beg to play on during down time or when they are done with their work.
As always, here is the link to try the site out and let me know what you think:
