Web Based Site #8 - Gimme That Gimkit!
Gimme That Gimkit!
Wow I cannot believe we are on our 9th blog post already!!! I hope that everything we talked about so far has been useful to you and your students. We have talked about presentation sites, sites to help with classroom lessons, and most recently sites to help students learn in a fun way while playing games to do so. Last week's discussion was about Prodigy, a site geared more towards helping students develop math skills, but also has an English side. There are a countless number of sites like Prodigy out there waiting to be explored. This week, I have uncovered a new one - Gimkit! Gimkit, like Prodigy, is an educational gaming site for your students. Have you heard of Kahoot? The best way to describe Gimkit is if Kahoot and Prodigy got married. Let me explain!
After logging into Gimkit, there are two options: Gimkit Live (which I will be discussing) Gimkit Ink which is where students can create and publish their own questions. Let's get into Gimkit Live. After clicking Gimkit Live, there are a few different options on the left-hand side, the first one being Kits. Kits are the questions that you have created that are turned into games for you students to play. Under Kits, you can see all the ones that you have made already or to make a new one. If you are making a new one, simply click New Kit. Then give it a name, subject, and a picture you want as the cover. Now you are ready to make your first Kit, start typing your questions and answers. You can add an image or audio to the questions along with symbols. There is another option besides multiple choice which is text input where students have to type out their answers. If you are having trouble creating more questions, have no fear, the bank is here!!! No, not the real bank, it's a question bank. There are premade questions that you can choose from and add into your Kit. After your questions are complete, it's time to get started. Assign the Kit to the class and have them play in real time. You can set the game to play for a certain amount of time, money that they can earn, or all in where students have to work together to meet the total goal that you have set. Before you start, there are a few options that you can set to make the game a little easier for students, like a starting amount of money or a handy cap so they cannot fall before a certain amount. Once you are ready to start, click start and a code will appear for students to type in. As the teacher, you will see the list of students that have joined. There are a bunch of different types of games that you students can play. As they adventure to make more money and buy powerups, they must answer questions correctly. Students can choose between different characters that they want to use for the game. After playing once, your students will be begging for more Gimkit!
Gimkit is a site that does not only have be used at school, but at home as well (and an added bonus is that the assignment grades itself after students finish it!). Students can also help you create games by submitting questions that you can approve. Overall, Gimkit is a great tool for your students to use as a fun educational way to learn, but at home and in school.
As always, here is the link to Gimkit. Let me know what you think, or if you know of any other educational gaming sites you want to review!
